Since red light's arena of action in the mitochondria we'll focus in this chapter mainly on mitochondrial signaling. Mitochondrial signaling is where the mitochondria in the cells communicate with the nucleus of the cell about what is going on, thus activating (or suppressing) transcription factors that affect what genes get expressed in the DNA-containing nucleus of our cells. Transcription factors are proteins that either stimulate or repress how much a gene is expressed. This is called “retrograde signaling.” Most people and even biologists and doctors think that our genes dictate what happens in our cells. Here we have the mitochondria generating signals (from environmental cues and stressors) that signal back to the nucleus which genes to switch on or off.
ATP production and mitochondrial signaling are closely tied together as most of these mitochondrial signaling stem from the creation of ATP (which includes oxygen consumption and charging of the mitochondrial membrane potential). So it is important to note that ATP's usefulness does not end with being the body's fuel source. It is also the primary signaling molecule and by simply creating more ATP signals healing and regeneration signaling pathways. AND because RLT increases ATP, what we see in studies on red light therapy are beneficial changes in this genetic expression including generation of beneficial proteins, growth factors and antioxidant enzymes that help with healing, repair, growth, regeneration, protection and even maintaining a youthful appearance.

In the author's opinion all the dozens if not hundreds of healing benefits of red light therapy comes from its ability to create more ATP energy as we saw in chapter 5. In fact one study showed that by Simply increasing ATP in wounded cells or underperfused cells may be sufficient to stimulate cells in areas of injury or metabolic derangement. What this means is even increasing ATP energy alone can heal the body.

While stimulating more ATP in body is core and most fundamental benefit of red light therapy, absorbing light and making ATP doesn't last long. That is why you have to make it all the time, because you are constantly burning it up. Remember that a healthy person at rest produces their weight in ATP every day (from only 250 grams of total molecular ATP weight)! So while absorbing the red and near infrared light from a good red light device produces more life essential ATP in your cells, and even though it is the fundamental key mechanism red light therapy works so well, the energy derived from ATP is not a long term thing, which brings us to the third core mechanism of Red Light Therapy - Signaling!
It turns out that red light therapy creates a host of what are called signaling molecules (which includes ATP and NO); and it is these signaling molecules that are responsible for the longer lasting effects of Red light therapy. The broad definition of signaling molecules is that they are molecules that are responsible for transmitting information between the cells in your body, AND between organelles like the mitochondrial and DNA.
Nitric oxide is one of the most important signaling molecules which is why I dedicated a whole chapter to it, but in this chapter we will look from more of a birds eye view and try to take in the 'big picture' underlying many health giving and health restoring signaling pathways that red light therapy impacts in a favorable way. The main goal of the myriad signaling pathways in the body is to create, maintain and sustain life and health in the body, and when the body is injured or sick - to heal, repair and regenerate.
